Frank Ryan, Ph.D., D (ABCC)

Technical Director

Dr. Ryan graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles and obtained a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington in 1976. After receiving his Ph.D., he was a United States National Cancer Institute Fellow at the University of Washington, researching cancer detection methods and participating in the Clinical Chemistry fellowship program.

Dr. Ryan was certified by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry in 1982. Following his postdoctoral studies, Dr. Ryan was employed for 14 years as a Clinical Chemist at Saint Joseph Hospital where he developed clinical methods, managed the chemistry laboratory and lectured to hospital staff and clients, also serving as the Chemical Hygiene Office and Radiation Safety Officer. He was responsible for the Chemistry, Radioimmunoassay, and Toxicology sections of the laboratory and established the Flow Cytometry section of the laboratory. During this period he held a position of Lecturer at the University of Colorado Medical School, undertook glucose meter research and served as an expert witness in point of care testing lawsuits.

In 1993, Dr. Ryan joined Laboratory Corporation of America as a Technical Director of the Denver, Colorado regional laboratory. As Technical Director, he was responsible for method development, method evaluation, quality assessment and operation of the laboratory. A major portion of his time was spent consulting with clients. In 2001, Dr. Ryan became Technical Director of both the Phoenix, Arizona and the Denver, Colorado regional laboratories. In 2002, he became General Manager and Medical Director of the Phoenix laboratory. He eventually became Medical Director of laboratories in Tucson, Arizona, Las Vegas, Nevada and other locations. In 2007, Dr. Ryan became Medical Director of both the Denver and Phoenix regional laboratories. Both laboratories were ISO 15189 certified in 2013. A major focus during Dr. Ryan’s time at LabCorp has been client education with the goal of assisting clients to make the best use of laboratory data. He lectured to client groups on a regular basis, frequently visited clients and served as consultant for the Indian Health Service. Dr. Ryan has been a College of American Pathologists inspection leader, leading five inspections in 2014. Dr. Ryan enjoys being in front of clients, determining their needs and improving their laboratory experience. Dr. Ryan joined National Reference Laboratory as Technical Director in 2015.
