A random urine urea test helps evaluate kidney function, specifically to differentiate between prerenal azotemia (e.g. dehydration) and acute kidney injury (AKI; intrinsic renal failure) by calculating the fractional excretion of urea (FEUrea, requires a paired plasma urea result), especially in patients receiving diuretics.
