Renal function tests are useful for identifying the presence of renal disease, monitoring the response of kidneys to treatment, and determining the progression of renal disease.

The panel includes: Sodium, Potassium, BUN, Creatinine, BUN/Creatinine Ratio, eGFR, Chloride, Bicarbonate (Total CO2), Phosphate, Albumin, Total Calcium and Fasting Glucose.

Results are reported in conventional units (mass/volume e.g. mg/dL)

Serum or Plasma

Serum (SST; Gold Top or plain serum; Red Top) - Preferred Lithium Heparin Plasma (Green Top) - acceptable

Patients are recommended to fast for 8 hours (but no longer than 16 hours) prior to collection.

This test does not require any special collection or pre-analytical handling. Follow routine specimen collection protocols.
