24-hour urine cortisol. Used in diagnosing Cushings syndrome.

Plastic urine container

Patient Preparation

Instruct the patient to void at 8 AM and discard the specimen

Collection

Then collect all urine including the final specimen voided at the end of the 24-hour collection period (ie, 8 AM the next morning) in a plastic bottle containing no preservative. Mix well. Screw the lid on securely. The urine collection does not require preservative. However, 6N HCL or acetic acid are acceptable preservatives if required for a concurrently collected assay
