Evaluates adrenal response to ACTH by measuring androstenedione. Used in congenital adrenal hyperplasia diagnosis.

Specimen Type

Serum

Volume

1 mL (each specimen), Draw blood for baseline androstenedione. Inject cosyntropin 250 ug IM or IV (if IV, dilute cosyntropin in 2-5 mL of sterile saline and inject over two minutes). Draw blood for stimulated androstenedione 60 minutes after.

No special preparation is required for this test. You may eat, drink, and take your medications as normal, unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider.
