NfL is elevated in several neurological disorders, but may also be raised following a cranial impact e.g. during sports. NfL has been shown to be useful in assessing the cause of cognitive impairment and is associated with Alzheimer's disease pathology.

Samples should be collected following overnight fasting. If patients are taking biotin (Vitamin B7), they should stop taking it 72 hours prior to sample collection.
