Volume

Testing Volume/Size: 2.5 cm length of nerve

Specimen Container

1. Submit 2cm length of a full-thickness nerve with a suture at the proximal end (do not inject nerve with anesthetic) 2. The fresh specimen is wrapped in saline moistened gauze, put in a 60 mL empty specimen container 3. Nerve should NOT be immersed in saline, fixative or other liquids 4. The specimen is immediately transported to the laboratory to prevent the tissue from losing any of its enzymatic reactivity or immunogenicity for immunohistochemical studies.Peripheral nerve biopsies are processed for light microscopy with special stains and electron microscopy when necessary.

Patient Preparation

No special preparation is required for this test. You may eat, drink, and take your medications as normal, unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider.

Collection

Contact NRL Customer Care 48 hours prior to sample collection to ensure specimen pick-up and transport arrangements are scheduled.6. A Muscle and Nerve Biopsy Worksheet must accompany all specimens, without exception.
