Histopathology and staining panel performed on muscle biopsy to diagnose neuromuscular disorders.

Specimen Type

Muscle skeletal (fresh)

Volume

Testing Volume/Size: 2cm (length) x 1cm (thick)

Specimen Container

1. Submit an open muscle biopsy (1x1x1 cm)2. The fresh specimen is wrapped in saline moistened gauze, put in a 60.0 mL empty specimen container.3. The fresh specimen is immediately transported to the laboratory in saline moistened gauze to prevent loss of enzymatic activity in the tissue. 3. Muscle should NOT be immersed in saline, fixative or other liquids.4.

Patient Preparation

No special preparation is required for this test. You may eat, drink, and take your medications as normal, unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider.

Collection

Send samples Monday -Wednesday only. Contact NRL Customer Care 48 hours prior to sample collection to ensure specimen pick-up and transport arrangements are scheduled.5. A Muscle and Nerve Biopsy Worksheet must accompany all specimens, without exception.
