Testing Frequency

Screening: Monday, Wednesday and Friday Confirmation: Wednesday

Test Overview

Assesses for lupus anticoagulant antibodies that may increase thrombosis risk; reflexes to confirmatory tests if needed.

Specimen Type

Citrated Plasma by double centrifugation Plasma should be platelet free as possible Platelet count should be less than 10 x 109/L Double centrifugation: Perform centrifugation for 15 mins at 2000-2500 g Carefully remove 2/3 of Plasma using a transfer pipette without disturbing the interface layer between Plasma and cells Transfer Plasma to an aliquot tube and repeat the centrifugation step Using a second pipette separate Plasma again into another aliquot tube staying clear of the platelet layer at the bottom of the tube Freeze immediately and maintain Frozen until tested

Volume

3 mL. Centrifuge, separate and freeze plasma into 3 aliquots of 1 mL each.

Specimen Container

3 x sodium citrate (Blue top), filled to the line.

Patient Preparation

Ideally, the patient should not be on anticoagulant therapy. Avoid warfarin (Coumadin®) therapy for two weeks prior to the test and heparin, direct Xa, and thrombin inhibitor therapies for about three days prior to testing. Indicate and provide details of if patient is on anticoagulant.

Collection

This test does not require any special collection or pre-analytical handling. Follow routine specimen collection protocols.

Specimen Stability
Temperature Period
