Test Overview

Starts with standard lipid panel and reflexes to detailed lipoprotein particle analysis by NMR.

Specimen Type

Lipid profile: Serum (preferred) or Plasma Lipoprotein reflex: Spun NMR LipoTube (preferred) Serum from a plain red-top tube Plasma from a lavender-top (EDTA-no gel) tube or green-top (heparin-no gel) tube

Volume

2 mL each tube

Specimen Container

Lipid profile: Gel-barrier transport, green-top (heparin), or lavender-top (EDTA) tube. Lipoprotein reflex: One of the following: NMR LipoTube (black-and-yellow-top tube), preferred, plain red-top tube, lavender-top (EDTA-no gel) tube, or green-top (heparin-no gel) tube. Two specimens must be submitted with this profile, one for the lipid profile and another for lipoprotein reflex testing.

Patient Preparation

No special preparation is required for this test. You may eat, drink, and take your medications as normal, unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider.

Collection

This test does not require any special collection or pre-analytical handling. Follow routine specimen collection protocols.

Specimen Stability
Temperature Period
Room temperature Lipid profile: Stable for six hours
Refrigerated Lipid profile: Stable for 10 days Lipoprotein reflex: Stable for six days
