HSV Culture and Typing
9 days
Enzyme-linked virus-inducible system (ELVIS®). ELVIS® HSV was developed using a transgenic baby hamster kidney-21 cell line. In this cell line, HSV infection causes the expression of a beta-galactosidase “reporter gene”, and it is the expression of this gene that can be used to monitor infection by HSV. Cultures positive by ELVIS® are confirmed by immunofluorescent staining.

Cultures and types HSV from clinical specimens. Used to confirm active infection.
Vesicular fluid ulcerated lesions pharyngeal and throat swabs Urine CSF autopsy and biopsy material eye exudates vaginal swabs
Swab in viral transport media, 1 mL fluid, 0.5 g tissue in transport medium
Viral, Chlamydia, or MycoPlasma culture transport provided by LabCorp, or other appropriate transport medium, body fluids and tissue samples may be submitted in viral transport media or in a sterile leakproof container.
No special preparation is required for this test. You may eat, drink, and take your medications as normal, unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider.
