Test Overview

The Apt test is used to distinguish fetal blood from maternal blood based on their differing resistance to alkali denaturation. The presence of maternal blood in the neonate’s gastrointestinal tract indicates ingestion during the birth process rather than bleeding originating from the neonate’s gastrointestinal system.

Patient Preparation

No special preparation is required for this test. You may eat, drink, and take your medications as normal, unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider.

Collection

Submit the specimen immediately after collection. The sample must contain fresh, visible blood; otherwise, the test cannot be performed and will be rejected.
