The AB42/40 ratio is useful in the evaluation of patients experiencing cognitive impairment and being assessed for Alzheimer disease and other causes of neurological decline.

Samples should be collected following overnight fasting. If patients are taking biotin (Vitamin B7), they should stop taking it 72 hours prior to sample collection.
Transport to the laboratory immediately following collection.
