Differentiates the source of elevated alkaline phosphatase (e.g., liver, bone). Useful in evaluating liver and bone disorders.
Serum or plasma (lithium-heparin)
2 mL
Red-top tube, gel-barrier tube or green-top (lithium-heparin) tube
Patient should be fasting overnight. Patients who have B or O blood group and are secretors may have an elevated ALP about two hours after a fatty meal. Cause for Rejection: Patient not fasting, Haemolysis, citrate, oxalate, or EDTA anticoagulated plasma
Serum: Separate serum from cells as soon as possible after the blood is allowed to clot. Plasma: Centrifuge and transfer separated heparin plasma to a plastic transport tube and label as Li-heparin plasma.
| Temperature | Period |
|---|---|
| Room temperature | 7 days |
| Refrigerated | 7 days |
| Frozen | 90 days |
| Freeze/thaw cycles | Stable x3 |
