Dr Imran Mirza

Dr Mirza brings over two decades (28 years) of extensive expertise in Anatomic Pathology & Clinical Pathology, Hematopathology, and Molecular Genetic Pathology.
Dr Mirza earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from University of the Punjab, Pakistan in 1990. He then moved to the USA and completed his residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Danbury Hospital, a program affiliated with Yale University, USA, from 1996 to 2000. Committed to advancing medical expertise, Dr Mirza completed his Fellowship in Hematopathology at Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA, from 2000 to 2001. He also holds a Master of Science (MS) from The George Washington University, Washington DC, USA.
Dr Mirza holds multiple board certifications from the American Board of Pathology and is currently a Diplomate and Certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology since 2000, in the subspecialty of Hematology since 2001 and co-certified by American Board of Pathology & American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics in Molecular Genetic Pathology in 2007. He was also awarded the Specialist Certificate in General Pathology and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2002.
Dr. Mirza is CAP certified as Laboratory Medical Director and holds Lab Management certification from the American Association of Clinical Chemistry. He has served as CAP inspector and inspection leader for over 15 years and is a certified internal auditor for ISO 15189 standards. He has actively participated in scientific committees of numerous national, regional, and international conferences and meetings. He has contributed as a reviewer of abstracts for these conferences and has been a highly sought-after speaker at national and international conferences.
Prior to joining the National Reference Laboratory, Dr Mirza worked as a Consultant Physician at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City since 2022. Previously, he worked as a Hematopathologist at Foothills Medical Center, Calgary, Canada and as the Medical/Scientific Director of Alberta Molecular Pathology Program for province-wide alignment of lab services for economical, efficient, effective, and equitable care in cancer diagnosis and genomics. Dr Mirza has also served as the founding Chair of the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Institute of Cleveland Clinical Abu Dhabi, UAE (2012-2019).
Apart from his clinical duties, Dr Mirza is heavily involved in academic and research endeavors. He holds Adjunct Professorship in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, as well as in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta, Canada. He has published several articles in esteemed journals and authored book chapters.
Dr Mirza’s scope of practice includes general Hematopathology and Molecular Genetic Pathology.
