Dr Adrian G Miller

Consultant Clinical Biochemist, Technical Director & Head of Clinical Chemistry

Dr Miller brings 17 years of expertise in Clinical Chemistry and Metabolic Medicine.

Dr Miller obtained his Bachelor of Science with Honours (BSc. (Hons.)) from the University of Manchester, UK, in 2000. He then studied for his Doctorate (PhD) in Reproductive Molecular Biology at the University of Manchester, graduating in 2004. Following three years as a Post-Doctoral Fellow and Research Scientist, he joined the Clinical Scientist Training Program (National Health Service, UK) in 2007, based at The University Hospital of South Manchester, UK. During this time, he completed his Master of Science (MSc.) in Clinical Biochemistry at the University of Manchester. He subsequently took up a post as a Senior Clinical Biochemist at the Royal Liverpool Teaching Hospital, UK, in 2001, before moving to North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust in 2013 where, upon gaining Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath), he took up a role as a Consultant Clinical Biochemist. In 2014, he moved to Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, UK, where he was appointed Head of Blood Sciences (Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Point of Care Testing) and Deputy Clinical Director.

Dr Miller has been a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (UK) since 2013, and has gained clinical expertise in endocrinology, metabolic medicine, nephrology, gastroenterology, transplant medicine and toxicology. Alongside these clinical elements, he has extensive knowledge of a wide-range of analytical chemistry methodologies, with a particular emphasis on liquid-chromatography tandem mass spectrometry, high-performance liquid chromatography, electrophoresis and immunoassay.
Dr Miller has almost 10 years’ experience in senior management and leadership roles, and has gained proficiency in efficiency and improvement methodologies, having undertaken advanced Lean training.

Prior to joining the National Reference Laboratory, Dr Miller worked for five years as a Senior Consultant Clinical Biochemist at Sidra Medicine, a women’s and children’s hospital in Doha, Qatar.

Dr Miller’s scope of practice includes core clinical chemistry functions, including clinical validation and interpretation of the extensive test repertoire, newborn screening, endocrinology, nephrology, metabolic medicine, allergen and auto-immunity testing, along with service reconfiguration projects and new method validation.

Dr Miller’s field of expertise is clinical chemistry, endocrinology, metabolic medicine, newborn screening and analytical methodology validation.
