Dr. Laila Abdel Wareth

Dr. Laila Osama AbdelWareth is board certified UAE national pathologist and physician executive with special interest in capacity building, quality assurance and health care administration. She graduated from Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University Cairo, Egypt. She completed her post graduate training at the University of British Columbia- Canada and obtained the Canadian and American boards in Medical Biochemistry and Clinical Pathology respectively. She also obtained a Masters Degree in Health Care Administration (EMHCA) from Zayed University, UAE.

Dr. Abdel Wareth previous employment was at British Columbia Children’s & Women’s Hospital in Vancouver- Canada where she served as Medical Biochemist of the Gene, Elements and Metabolism Program of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine in 1996. 

Upon returning to the UAE Dr. Abdel Wareth held several leadership positions as Head of Research & Specialized Testing Laboratory and Deputy Chief Medical Officer at Mafraq Hospital from 1997 – 2005, Chair of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Institute at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) from 2006 – 2014, Chief Medical Officer of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Services at SEHA  from 2013 – 2014 and the Chair of Clinical Pathology at the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (CCAD) from 2015 – 2019. 

Dr AbdelWareth major contributions in the UAE laboratory diagnostic field included the introduction of the first National Newborn Screening Program in 1998 in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.  The re-activation of the National Tissue Typing Laboratory to support solid organ and bone marrow transplantation. The introduction of Total Laboratory Automation. The introduction of laboratory accreditation by the College of American Pathologists, as well as American Association of Blood Banks in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. 

She is an active member in various scientific societies and has several publications to her credit in the field of laboratory medicine. Dr. Laila is a recipient of Dr. Arthur Bloomfield Award for Excellence in Medical Education as well as Sheikh Rashid Award for Scientific Outstanding.
