Dr. Murthy completed his undergraduate and postgraduate degree at the University of Mysore in Karnataka, India, and obtained his Ph.D. in Neurochemistry from Bangalore University Karnataka, India in 1986. Following, Dr. Murthy completed two post-doctoral fellowships in the US; at the Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University, New York, followed by the Children National Medical Center, George Washington University, Washington DC. In 1996, he received his Board Certification in Clinical Chemistry and in 2000 Dr. Murthy completed his Clinical Laboratory Fellowship focused on advanced training in Molecular Diagnostics and Clinical Mass Spectrophotometry at the Department of Laboratory Medicine National Institutes of Health, USA. Dr. Murthy is a Diplomat of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry and a Fellow of the Academy of Clinical Chemistry.

After completing his studies, Dr. Murthy served as the Director of Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnostic Services at the Department of Pathology, Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island (MHRI), USA, for 15 years. As Director, he was both technically and operationally responsible for the Core Lab, Special Chemistry, Drug and Toxicology and Molecular Diagnostic laboratories at the institutional hospitals, while holding his academic affiliation as Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Warren Alpert Brown Medical School, during his tenure at MHRI.  He was actively involved in teaching, training and research for the 4 year Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) Program of the Brown University, which has an accreditation of the Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).  With his expertise in the cutting-edge fields of Molecular Diagnostics, Liquid Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry, Dr. Murthy has been recognized as a College of American Pathology qualified discipline specialist for molecular pathology, molecular microbiology and advanced toxicology and has participated in both national and international laboratory accreditation laboratory inspections.

Dr. Murthy has authored or co-authored many peer-reviewed publications, abstracts and has been active in the American Association for Clinical Chemistry and American College of Pathologists throughout his professional career. He holds many US State licenses including the prestigious New York State Clinical Laboratory Director Licensure.

Dr. Jay Murthy joined National Reference Laboratory in 2016 as Technical Director.
